Every summer the inbound wave hits: Hurlburt Field, Eglin AFB, 7th Group up in Crestview, NAS Pensacola, Whiting Field. New plates in the Publix lot, new faces at the Navarre Beach pier, and a whole lot of cars that were tinted for a different climate and a different state's law.
We've tinted a lot of those cars. This is the guide we'd hand you at the gate if we could.
The heat here is a different problem
If you came from Colorado, Washington, Germany, Korea — the sun here is not the sun there. Navarre sits at 30° north with a UV index that spends most of the summer at "extreme," humidity that keeps nights hot, and a parking situation on base that's all asphalt, all sun, all day.
The number that matters is cabin temperature. A car parked in the sun at Hurlburt's main lot at 1pm will hit 130–140°F inside. That's the steering wheel you can't touch and the child seat you have to wipe down. Factory glass blocks almost none of the infrared heat causing that.
Quality ceramic film rejects 55–65% of total solar energy; ceramic IR pushes past 70%. That's a 10–17°F difference in peak cabin temperature and a much faster cool-down when you get in. It's also why ceramic — not carbon, not the cheap dyed stuff — is what we recommend for a car that lives on a base lot.
Your out-of-state tint and Florida law
This is the part nobody tells you at in-processing.
Florida's tint statute (316.2953–.2954) is written for any motor vehicle on Florida roads, and it has no carve-out for out-of-state plates — so don't count on your home state's law to cover you here. And most people register here within a few months for the insurance and tax reasons; once the Florida plate goes on, there's no question at all. If the film has to go, here's how tint removal works.
Florida's limits are tighter than most of the places people PCS from:
| State | Front side windows | Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | 25% | 28% |
| Georgia | 32% | 28% |
| Alabama | 32% | 28% |
| North Carolina | 35% | 28% |
| Virginia | 50% | 28% |
| Colorado | 27% | 28% |
| Washington | 24% | 28% |
| Arizona | 33% | 28% |
| New Mexico | 20% | 28% |
If you came from Texas, Washington, New Mexico or anywhere that allowed darker front windows, there's a real chance your front tint is illegal on a Florida registration. Rear windows are more forgiving — a Florida sedan can go to 15% in back, and an SUV or truck to 6% behind the driver.
What to do: text us and we'll meter your glass. Takes 30 seconds, no charge. If the fronts are illegal we'll tell you what it takes to fix them, and if everything's fine we'll say so.
The gate is not where you want to find out
Security forces at Hurlburt and Eglin see thousands of vehicles a day and they notice tint. It's usually not a ticket at the gate — but it can be a conversation, a note, or a referral, and off base, illegal tint is a primary offense in Florida. A deputy on Highway 98 can stop you for the tint alone. It's a nonmoving violation, about $116, no points — and you still have to fix the film.
Legal tint that still looks dark and still beats the heat is completely achievable. That's the whole job.
How the driveway install works in base housing
We take shop appointments in Navarre, but for military families we usually come to you. We bring film, a plotter, power, water and a VLT meter to wherever the car is parked. For military families that's usually:
- Base housing driveways at Hurlburt and Eglin, which we're in every week
- Off-base rentals in Navarre, Mary Esther, Fort Walton, Niceville, Crestview and Gulf Breeze
- An off-base workplace lot if that's easier than home
For lots inside the gate, access rules vary by installation and sponsor; we've done it, but most people find a residence or off-base location simpler. We'll sort it out by text.
The install takes 1–2 hours. You don't have to stand there. Windows stay up for 2–4 days afterward, and full cure takes up to a month in the humidity — small water pockets in week one are normal.
The military and first-responder discount
Active duty, reserve, Guard, retired, and police, fire and EMS. Mention it when you text and have the ID at the install. Same lifetime warranty, same posted prices — carbon from $299.99, ceramic from $349, ceramic IR from $449 for a sedan — with the discount taken off.
We also run multi-vehicle pricing: if a spouse's car or a buddy's truck gets done in the same visit, both come down.
Trucks, Jeeps and the second vehicle
Base parking lots are full of lifted trucks, Wranglers and the family SUV, and each one has its own tint answer.
Trucks and SUVs get the best deal in Florida law: 28% up front like everything else, but anything behind the driver can go to 6%. A Tacoma or a Tahoe can run near-limo tint in back, legally, which is why so many of them do. Crew cabs take a little longer than a sedan because of the extra glass; we quote them as SUVs.
Jeeps with soft tops can't have the rear zippered windows filmed — the vinyl flexes and the film won't stay bonded. We tint the front doors and the windshield strip, and on hard tops we do the whole thing.
The second vehicle is where the multi-vehicle discount comes in. If a spouse's car, a buddy's truck or the boat's cabin glass gets done in the same visit, the price on both comes down. We've spent whole Saturdays in one base-housing cul-de-sac doing four cars back to back.
PCS timing: do it early, not late
Two pieces of advice from watching this cycle for years:
Inbound: tint in the first couple of weeks, before the summer sets in and before the car is registered. If you're going to register in Florida, you'll know what's legal before you do it.
Outbound: if you're PCSing out of Florida to a state with looser limits, your Florida-legal tint is legal almost everywhere. If you're going somewhere stricter — a handful of northeastern states — we can tell you what to expect. And if you're selling the car locally, a fresh ceramic install with a transferable lifetime warranty is one of the cheapest things you can do to move it faster.
What we hear from base families most
- "The car seat was too hot to put the baby in." Ceramic fixes this more than anything else you can buy.
- "I didn't know my Texas tint was illegal here." Common. We meter it for free.
- "I don't have time to sit in a shop." You don't have to. We come to the driveway, seven days a week.
- "Can you do the truck and the car the same day?" Yes, and it's cheaper that way.
Book it
Text (850) 930-1195 with the vehicle, where it's parked (base housing is fine — just say which), and whether it currently has tint. You'll get a firm price and the next open slot, usually same-day or next-day, with no travel charge anywhere from Pensacola to Crestview.
Thank you for what you do. Let us make the car livable.
