Walk into three tint shops between Pensacola and Destin and you'll get three different pitches. One will push ceramic because it's the highest ticket. One will say carbon is "basically the same." One will quote you $99 and not tell you what the film is.
None of that helps you. What helps is understanding what the film is made of, because that's what determines the two things that matter in Florida: how much heat it rejects and how long it lasts.
The one number that matters: TSER
Everybody talks about how dark tint is. Darkness — VLT — controls glare and privacy and it's what the law regulates. But darkness is not what keeps the car cool. Two films at the exact same 20% shade can differ by 30 percentage points in heat rejection.
The number to look for is TSER — total solar energy rejected. It accounts for visible light, UV and infrared, and infrared is where most of the heat you feel actually lives. Ballpark TSER by film type:

Notice every film blocks 99% of UV — that's a given with any legitimate window film and it's why even cheap tint stops your dash from cracking. The difference is heat.
Dyed film: the one you'll pay to remove
Dyed film is polyester with dye in it. It's the cheapest thing a shop can put on a car, which is why the $99 special is almost always dyed.
What it does well: it's dark, it cuts glare, it blocks UV, and it's cheap. What it does badly is everything else. Dye absorbs heat rather than rejecting it, so the glass itself gets hot and radiates into the cabin. And dye breaks down in UV. Florida's UV index is among the highest in the continental US; on the Gulf Coast, dyed film typically starts turning purple in two to three summers, then bubbles as the adhesive gives up.
We don't install dyed film. Most of the tint removal we do in Navarre is removing it.
Carbon: the lifetime-color budget pick
Carbon film replaces dye with carbon particles. That change fixes the two big dyed-film problems: the color is permanent, and carbon actually rejects a meaningful share of infrared heat instead of soaking it up.
Carbon runs 40–50% TSER, has a rich, matte-black look that a lot of people prefer over the slight sheen of ceramic, and it's non-metallic, so nothing interferes with your phone or GPS. It's our $299.99 sedan / $329 SUV film and it's a genuinely good product.
Where it falls short is the top end of heat rejection. On a mild day you won't notice the gap to ceramic. On a 96° day with a black interior, you will.
Ceramic: why it's the film we install most
Ceramic film uses nano-ceramic particles engineered to reflect and absorb infrared wavelengths specifically. The result is 55–65% TSER at the same shade as carbon, with no metal in the film.
What that means inside the car:
- The cabin heats up slower when parked and cools down faster when you start driving.
- The AC isn't fighting the glass all afternoon, so it runs less.
- The steering wheel and seat belt buckle don't brand you.
- Your phone, GPS, toll pass and tire sensors all work exactly as before.
Nano ceramic is $349 sedan / $399 SUV here. The $49 over carbon buys roughly 15 percentage points of heat rejection, and in Navarre — where the car sits in a Publix lot or a base parking lot all day — that's the difference people write reviews about.
It's also the film we recommend when someone wants to stay light and legal. A 50% ceramic on the front windows passes any meter in Florida and still outperforms a dark dyed film on heat.
Ceramic IR: the one most people actually book
Ceramic IR is ceramic with a denser infrared-blocking layer. It rejects up to 96% of infrared heat — the band you actually feel on your skin — which works out to 65–75%+ TSER across the whole solar spectrum. It's $449 sedan / $529 SUV, and it outsells the other two.
It's the right call in three situations we see constantly around here:
- Black or dark interiors. Dark leather and dash plastics absorb everything that gets through; IR film is the biggest lever you have.
- Cars that live outside. If you park at Hurlburt or Eglin all day, or your driveway has no shade, the car sees eight hours of direct sun.
- West-facing commutes. The afternoon drive from Fort Walton or Destin back toward Navarre on 98 puts the sun straight through the driver's window.
For a daily driver that parks in a garage, standard ceramic is usually the sweet spot.
What about metallic film?
Metallic (metallized) film was the heat-rejection film before ceramic existed. It works — 35–45% TSER — by reflecting heat with a thin metal layer. The problem is that same metal layer reflects radio waves, so it interferes with cell signal, GPS, satellite radio, SunPass transponders and tire-pressure sensors. It also has a mirror-like reflectivity that can fail Florida's reflectivity limit. Ceramic made it obsolete. We don't stock it.
How to tell what film is on a car you're buying
A lot of the used trucks and SUVs changing hands around Hurlburt and Eglin every PCS season already have tint on them, and the seller usually doesn't know what it is. Three quick tells:
- Purple or brown cast, especially on the back glass: dyed film, and it's already failing. Budget for removal.
- A mirror-like sheen from outside, and the tint looks silvery in sunlight: metallic. It may be blocking your phone and it may fail Florida's reflectivity limit.
- Deep, neutral black with a slight charcoal tone, no bubbles after a few summers: carbon or ceramic. Keep it — but have it metered, because it may be darker than Florida allows up front.
We'll meter any car for free before you buy it or before we quote it. It takes 30 seconds and it tells you whether you're inheriting a good install or a removal bill.
Shade and heat are separate decisions
This trips people up. Picking a film type decides heat rejection. Picking a shade decides darkness. They're independent.
So the right order is: pick the film for your heat problem, then pick the darkest shade that's legal on your glass — which for a Florida sedan is 28% up front and 15% in back, and we meter to make sure.
If you're limited on shade — say you commute onto base and don't want any attention at the gate — go up in film quality instead of down in shade. A light ceramic beats a dark dyed film on the only number that matters.
The warranty tells you what the shop expects
Every film we install carries a lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, cracking and purpling. We can do that because carbon and ceramic don't fail those ways. A shop that offers a one-year warranty, or none, is telling you what they expect from the film.

- Budget, lifetime color, decent heat cut: Carbon.
- Most people in Navarre: Ceramic IR — it is the one we install most.
- Stepping up from carbon on a budget: Nano ceramic.
- Dyed: No.

Questions people ask us
What is the difference between ceramic and carbon tint?
Both hold their color for life and neither interferes with signals. Ceramic uses nano-ceramic particles that reject infrared heat — 55–65% total solar energy rejected versus 40–50% for carbon. Ceramic costs about $100 more and you feel the difference on a Florida afternoon.
Does ceramic tint interfere with phone or GPS signal?
No. Ceramic is non-metallic. The films that block signal are old metallic (metallized) films. Ceramic, carbon and dyed films all pass GPS, cell, radio, toll transponder and tire-pressure signals normally.
Why does cheap tint turn purple?
Dyed film gets its color from dye, and UV breaks dye down. Florida's UV index is among the highest in the country, so dyed film on the Gulf Coast typically starts shifting purple in two to three summers. Carbon and ceramic get their color from particles, not dye, and don't fade.
Is ceramic IR worth it over regular ceramic?
If the car has a black interior, parks outside all day, or you drive into the afternoon sun daily, yes — IR film adds the highest infrared rejection available. For most daily drivers, standard ceramic is the sweet spot.
Can I get ceramic tint that isn't dark?
Yes. Heat rejection and darkness are separate properties. A 50% or 70% ceramic film can reject more heat than a 5% dyed film, so you can stay light and legal and still drop cabin temperature substantially.
